BEST INDOOR CYCLING APPS

What each one is actually for. Including ours, with its limitations stated plainly.

THERE ARE REALLY ONLY FOUR KINDS OF APP

TypeWhat it doesExamples
Virtual worldRide and race against other people in a game worldZwift, MyWhoosh
Real-world videoRide real roads on video, matched to your effortRouvy, FulGaz
Structured trainingPlans and workouts, no world, all substanceTrainerRoad, Wahoo SYSTM
Motivation layerMakes your existing setup less boringLuftQuest

Almost every argument about which app is best is really a disagreement about which of these four categories someone wants. Decide the category first and the choice gets easy.

HOW TO CHOOSE IN THIRTY SECONDS

  • You want to race people: Zwift, or MyWhoosh if you would rather not pay.
  • You want to ride famous climbs: Rouvy or FulGaz.
  • You want a coach to tell you exactly what to do: TrainerRoad.
  • You already have a setup and just cannot face another hour staring at a wall: LuftQuest.
  • You are not sure and do not want to spend anything: start free, and only pay once you know what you actually miss.

WHERE LUFTQUEST FITS

We are not a virtual world and we are not trying to be. LuftQuest is a free layer over whatever trainer you already own: pair your power, heart rate and cadence over Bluetooth, pick a structured workout, and ride with an extremely opinionated AI coach, a scrolling retro road, prize challenges and an arcade leaderboard.

What we do not have: mass group rides, other riders on screen, video of real roads, or a multi-month adaptive plan that rewrites itself. If those are what you want, one of the apps above is a better answer, and we would rather say so.

FAQ

Can I use more than one app at once?

Sometimes. Bluetooth trainers usually allow one connection at a time, so one app controls the trainer while another may read a separate sensor. ANT+ broadcasts more freely and handles multiple listeners better.

Do I need a smart trainer?

For virtual worlds with gradients, effectively yes. For structured training and coaching apps, any power source works — a power meter on a dumb trainer is plenty.

Is a free app good enough?

For training, absolutely. Structure and consistency drive fitness, not graphics. Paid apps buy you community, realism and adaptive planning.
