ROUVY VS ZWIFT

Real roads on film against a game world full of people. Two subscriptions, two philosophies.

THE CORE DIFFERENCE

Rouvy overlays your ride onto video footage of real roads, so you climb the actual Alpe d'Huez with the actual hairpins. Zwift builds an invented world with cartoon avatars, and fills it with tens of thousands of real riders you can chase, race and draft.

One sells authenticity. The other sells company. Which you should pay for depends entirely on which of those keeps you pedalling for an hour.

WHERE EACH ONE WINS

Rouvy wins on preparation

If you have a gran fondo or an Alpine trip booked, riding the actual route beforehand is genuinely useful — you learn the pacing, the gradient changes and where the climb hurts.

Zwift wins on turning up

A group ride leaving in ten minutes is the most effective motivation device ever built for indoor cycling. If your problem is starting rather than finishing, this is worth the money.

Rouvy wins on variety per hour

Thousands of real routes across the world, without needing to learn a map.

Zwift wins on racing

Structured categories, results and a genuine competitive scene. Nothing else comes close at this scale.

WHICH TO CHOOSE

  • You race, or you need other people: Zwift.
  • You have a real event to prepare for: Rouvy.
  • You mostly do structured workouts: either, or spend less and use a dedicated training app.
  • You want a free option first: try MyWhoosh for the world, or LuftQuest for coaching on the setup you own.

FAQ

Can I subscribe to both?

You can, but most riders find they use one and feel guilty about the other. Pick based on how you are actually motivated, and cancel the loser.

Which has better workouts?

Both offer solid FTP-based libraries and plans. The difference is scenery and community, not the training itself.

Do I need a smart trainer for both?

Strongly recommended for both — gradient response is a large part of what you are paying for.

Is there a free way to get most of this?

MyWhoosh provides a free virtual world, and LuftQuest adds free coaching and prize challenges to any trainer. You lose the racing scene and the real-road video.
