AI CYCLING COACH
It watches your watts. It has opinions. You can choose how rude those opinions are.
WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES
The coach reads your live data — power against your target, cadence, heart rate zone, how far into the interval you are — and says something about it. Not canned prompts on a timer: remarks generated from what is happening on the bike at that moment.
- Notices when you drop below the target and tells you, usually unkindly.
- Counts you into and out of intervals so you know when the suffering ends.
- Reacts to your heart rate tipping into the red.
- Comments on cadence collapsing, which is the first sign an interval is slipping away.
- Shuts up during recovery blocks, mostly.
THE PERSONAS
| Coach | Style |
|---|---|
| LeMond | Measured, tactical, slightly professorial American pragmatism |
| Cavendish | Sharp, cocky, sprinter's contempt for anyone sitting up |
| Contador | Attacking, romantic, permanently telling you to go now |
| Merckx | Relentless and unimpressed. Nothing you do is enough |
| Voigt | Loud, cheerful brutality. Shut up legs |
| Hambini | Technical insults, tolerances, reams, and the engineering age of a five-year-old |
Each persona has its own vocabulary and phrase structure, so they do not all sound like the same voice in different hats.
HOW MUCH, AND HOW RUDE
Chattiness
A slider from near-silence to a remark roughly every couple of seconds. The coach always finishes a line before starting another, so you never get two voices talking over each other.
Tone
A second slider runs from relaxed and intellectual through to unhinged and abusive. The polite end is genuinely polite; the far end is not.
Language
Swearing is off by default. Turning on expletives requires confirming you are 18 or over. Say no and you get the clean-but-brutal coach, which is still quite enough for most people.
WITH MUSIC
Connect Spotify Premium and the coach ducks under your music when he speaks, then hands the volume back. You can also set the mix to music only, coach only, or both.
WHY A RUDE COACH WORKS
Indoor training fails for one reason: nobody is watching. There is no group riding away from you, no headwind, no reason not to sit up. A voice that notices the exact second your power drops restores the accountability that outdoor riding provides for free.
It is also funny, which matters more than it sounds. Sessions you look forward to are sessions you complete.
