CYCLING IN GIRONA

The Catalan city half the WorldTour calls home — and the rides that explain why.

WHY GIRONA

Girona became cycling's most famous adopted hometown through a simple formula: quiet roads in three directions, a climb or two worth testing yourself on, a beautiful old town full of coffee, and a mild climate. Dozens of professional riders live and train here, and the local riding culture is built around them — which means it's built very well.

THE RIDES

RideDistance from townCharacter
Rocacorba~10 km climbThe test piece. Averages ~7% with steeper ramps; the local segment is a who's-who of pro names.
Els Àngels~10 km climbThe gentler classic — a steady ~5% through forest to a sanctuary. The default interval climb.
Banyoles lake loop30-60 kmFlat-to-rolling laps of the rowing lake. Recovery-day territory with a coffee stop.
Sant Hilari Sacalm80-100 km round tripThe long day — a gradual mountain-road drag into the Guilleries. Quiet and green.
Costa Brava coast road90-130 kmOut to Tossa de Mar and along the corniche. Busier, but the scenery earns it.

All distances are from the old town; everything here is reachable without a car.

THE CULTURE

Coffee rides are real

The old town's cafes fill with lycra from mid-morning. The etiquette is the local pace: easy until everyone's warm, then it depends who shows up. Don't be surprised if the friendly group ride contains a Grand Tour stage winner.

It works year-round

Winters are cooler than Mallorca's coast but drier than most of northern Europe. Summer heat is real in July and August — ride early, hide in the forest climbs midday.

PRACTICAL NOTES

  • Base yourself in or near the old town (Barri Vell) — you can ride every route from the door.
  • Bike hire and guiding are well established; book ahead in spring and autumn.
  • Girona airport is small but handy; Barcelona is about an hour away by train for more flight options.
  • The riding is hillier than Mallorca's Pla — there's no truly flat grid here, so budget your recovery days accordingly.
  • Spend band: mid-range. Apartments and hotels span a wide range; food and coffee are excellent value by northern European standards.

FAQ

Is Girona or Mallorca better for a cycling trip?

Mallorca has bigger mountains and more flat recovery riding; Girona has better cafe culture, quieter roads and a real city. Strong climbers and repeat visitors often prefer Girona.

How hard is Rocacorba?

Around 10 km at roughly 7% with ramps over 10%. It's a genuine test — warm up thoroughly and ride your own pace, not the segment's.

When is the best time to ride in Girona?

March to June and September to November. Winter is rideable but cold in the mornings; August is hot.
