MALLORCA CYCLING HOLIDAYS
When to go, where to base yourself, and how fit you need to be before you book.

WHEN TO GO
| Months | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Feb - Apr | Cool mornings, mild days, almond blossom, quiet roads | Prime time. This is when the pro teams are here. |
| May - Jun | Warm, longer days, busier | Excellent — book accommodation early. |
| Jul - Aug | Hot (30°C+), crowded, expensive | Rideable at dawn, but not why you come. |
| Sep - Nov | Warm sea, quieter again, occasional storms | The second sweet spot. |
| Dec - Jan | 10-15°C, wet spells in the mountains | Hardy souls only — but the cafes stay open. |
WHERE TO BASE YOURSELF
Port de Pollença / Alcúdia (north) — the classic choice
Flat seafront, huge cycling infrastructure, and the two gateways to the Tramuntana (Femenia and sa Batalla) on your doorstep. Cap de Formentor is a half-day from the door. Most bike-hire shops and cycling-friendly hotels are here. Spend band: mid-range, with plenty of apartment options that bring costs down for groups.
Sóller / Deià (west) — the scenic choice
You're inside the mountains. Every ride is a climbing ride. Gorgeous, quieter, and better for strong riders who don't need a flat recovery loop. Spend band: mid to high.
Palma (south-west) — the city choice
Best restaurants and nightlife, easy airport access, and a fast flat coastal strip heading east. You trade immediate mountain access for culture. Spend band: wide range.
BIKE HIRE VS BRINGING YOUR OWN
- Hire fleets on the island are genuinely good — current-generation carbon road bikes are standard in the north.
- Hiring avoids airline bike fees and the risk of transit damage; bringing your own avoids a week adapting to someone else's fit.
- If you hire, bring your own pedals, saddle (if you're fussy) and a fit note with your stack/reach numbers.
- Book the bike before you book the flights in peak season — sizes sell out.
HOW FIT DO YOU NEED TO BE?
Honestly: less fit than you fear, fitter than you hope. A rider who can comfortably do a 3-hour ride at home can enjoy Mallorca by alternating mountain days with flat Pla days. What the island punishes is back-to-back climbing days on no base — the climbs are 40-90 minutes of steady effort, and there is no flat route between most of them.
Eight to twelve weeks of structured work before you fly — two quality sessions a week plus one longer ride — transforms the trip from survival into the best week of your year.
