SADDLE HEIGHT CALCULATOR
Enter your inseam. Get a starting saddle height, then fine-tune it in millimetres.
SADDLE HEIGHT CALCULATOR
| Measurement | Starting point | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Saddle height | 72.4 cm from bottom bracket centre to saddle top, along the seat tube | Heel on the pedal at the bottom of the stroke: leg almost straight, hips level |
| Saddle setback | Knee roughly over the pedal axle with the crank forward and level | Drop a plumb line from the front of the kneecap |
| Saddle tilt | Level, or the nose 1-2 degrees down at most | Spirit level along the saddle top |
| Reach | Slight bend in the elbows, shoulders relaxed, back not rounded | You should be able to ride the drops for a whole zone 2 block |
Measure inseam barefoot against a wall with a book pulled firmly up between your legs, floor to the top of the book.
A formula gets you into the right neighbourhood. Change one thing at a time, ride it for a week, and see a fitter or physio if anything hurts.
Saddle height is measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle, following the line of the seat tube. Measuring to the rails, or straight up vertically, gives a different and useless number.
MEASURE YOUR INSEAM PROPERLY
- Barefoot, back to a wall, feet about 15cm apart.
- Pull a hardback book up between your legs, spine horizontal, firmly but comfortably.
- Mark the wall at the top of the book.
- Measure floor to mark. Repeat three times and use the biggest figure.
WHY 0.883?
The 0.883 multiplier comes from the well-known LeMond method and lands most riders within a few millimetres of a comfortable height. A closely related variant uses 0.885. Either way it is a starting point that gets you into the right window quickly — the final number comes from how the position feels over several rides.
| Method | Formula | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LeMond | inseam x 0.883, BB centre to saddle top | The most widely used starting number |
| Holmes / 0.885 | inseam x 0.885 | Marginally higher, within normal adjustment range |
| Heel method | Heel on pedal, leg almost straight at the bottom | Good on-bike sanity check for any formula |
| Knee angle | 25-35 degrees of knee bend at the bottom of the stroke | What a professional fitter measures; needs video or a goniometer |
ADJUST FROM THE STARTING POINT
- Change 3-5mm at a time and ride three sessions before judging.
- Hips rocking, toes pointing down, or pain behind the knee: too high.
- Pain at the front of the knee, or feeling cramped and unable to breathe: too low.
- New shoes or new cleats change your effective height. Re-check.
- Mark the seatpost with tape before you move anything so you can get back.
